Charles E. Escalera, 21, of Morganfield, was arrested Feb. 24 by Kentucky State Police and accused of killing Josiah Mala- chi Kilman, a fellow student and teammate on the college wres- tling squad.
A murder conviction in Kentucky can include life imprisonment or the death penalty. Kilman, an 18-year- old freshman from Montana, was found unresponsive in the dorm and his death was attributed to asphyxia- tion by manual strangu- lation, according to authorities. The Campbellsville Police was set at $2 million cash. Kentucky State Police located Escalera later that day hiding on a farm in Green County. He remains in the Taylor County Detention Center where he has been since his arrest. Upon ar raignment, bond The grand jur also approved charges of third-de- gree burglary, a Class felony, and theft by unlawful taking, a Class misdemeanor. An indictment is a formal charge, not proof of guilt. Members of a grand jury are asked to determine if enough evidence exists to proceed to trail.
