California is a very diverse state consisting of many races, of whom do not conform to the traditional "white" race which mainly support Trump and Republican. Therefore, in this case it means that the Democrats managed to win over many seats even before results came from California (which mainly support Democrats obviously). I might not be 100% right on this though as I'm not American and not that well-versed in American politics in general, so all apologies for any mistake in my interpretation.

@sunshowery Thank you very much!
"results came in from California and its batch of hotly contested races."
is
"results came in from California and California's batch of hotly contested races"??
Why does it not simply say like:
"results came in from California"
or
"results came in from California's batch of hotly contested races"
