4 Things to focus on to improve your mental healthHelping yourself to improve your own mental health isn't always easy. We are not taught what we can do to help ourselves. Very often we are led to believe that therapy or medication is the only way. While I'm not knocking those approaches, helping yourself has to be part of the solution. Here is a simple plan called the PALM Framework to help you improve your own mental health. Even if it helps a little, it's better than nothing. Focus on these 4 things over a period of time (give it 90 days for example) and see how you get on.P stands for Physical. Do something physical every day, something different to what you are currently doing. Whether it be going for a walk, run, cycle, swim or just putting some music on and dancing wildly around the living room. A 30 minute walk each day has been proven to improve emotional states and overall mood. Whatever it is you choose to do, just move and try to make it for a minimum of 30 minutes daily.A stands for Attention. Find something worthwhile or that you enjoy doing to focus on. Try learning something new, for example a new language or learn to play an instrument. It could be you work on a new skill, for example meditation or Tai Chi. Or, maybe it's something you already love doing but haven't done it recently like gardening or baking. Where you place your attention can determine how you feel.L stands for Language. Be mindful of both the words you say out loud and, in particular, your thoughts. What you say to yourself, and how you say it, have a huge effect on how you feel. Consider the questions you ask of yourself, are the negative and disempowering or positive and upbeat? You have the choice, you can choose which type of question you ask and you can select the language you want to use. M stands for Meaning. As human beings we determine a meaning for everything, it's just what we do. However, we get to choose that meaning. So make a choice of what the day is going to mean to you and make it a positive one. No matter what happens ask yourself "What does this really mean to me?" and "What else could it mean?". The meaning we create in any situation creates our life.I call this having your emotions in the P.A.L.M. of your hand. To use it effectively you have to exercise your ability to choose what to do with it. You could ignore it, or you could use it every day for 90 days and see how you feel at the end of it. My bet is that you will want to carry it on.If you have read right to the end of this, thank you. If you work for a business that wants to help its workforce with the mental health then I can help. Promoting a culture of #gratitude and #appreciation in your business builds trust. When team members are given the safe space to share with each other their bond grows and along with it comes teamwork.A gratitude journal shared among team members can create a culture of appreciation. It takes time and effort on the part of the leadership, but it is more than worthwhile Why not try it out! #GratitudeAtWork #PositiveCulture #mentalhealth #teamwork #journalling #workforcewellbeing #workplacewellbeing

Will you answer this quick question please? Now that the HSE have included mental health in their legislation guidance, should Health and Safety Managers be part of the mental health support system and general conversation within a business?

Physical health is closely linked to mental health. Does your workplace offer fitness benefits? The link between mind and body was discovered back in the 1970's by Dr Candace Pert (Google her). We need to be balanced across mind and body.#HealthyBodyHealthyMind #EmployeeBenefits #mentalhealth #eap #hrmanager #peoplemanager #hrdirector #hrconsultant

🌟She’s survived 5 months so far 🌟Ok, so this isn’t the usual thing to post on LinkedIn, but stay with me because it’s important.5 months ago today, Boxing Day 2023, at around 8:30am my wife, Paula, suffered a massive heart attack. It came out of nowhere. In fact, we would find out later that she didn’t just suffer a heart attack but also some thing called a SCAD.SCAD stands for Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection. Basically a tear in one of the major arteries to the heart, often the Aorta. However, my wife being who she is didn’t want to just tear one artery, she tore 3!She tore the Aorta, a branch off the Aorta and the Left Anterior Descending. Thanks to the amazing paramedics and some truly awesome cardiologists at Royal Papworth Hospital, she survived. By all accounts if she had got to the hospital 10 minutes later she wouldn’t have! She was in hospital for 5 1/2 weeks and when she finally came home I had to carry her to bed as she was so weak. Her recovery is incredibly slow which frustrates her, but at least she is here to recover! After 5 months she is still bed bound for 90% of the time. She manages the odd journey down stairs now and then. Why do I tell you this? Well, I have a couple of points here……1 - in case you haven’t figured it out yet, life is short. Do the things you want to do, go the places you want to go and be with the people you want to be with. 2 - your health, both physical and mental, is your most valuable resource. Someone once told me this “you can always make more money and have more things but you can never replace your health”. That statement rings loudly in my ears more than ever. Take care of yourself and get help where you need it….. both physically and mentally.I wish you a happy, health and long life my friends.
